...The view from here...

It was a last minute assignment; the reporter who was scheduled to cover this had a family emergency, so I volunteered to go. It sounded a bit bland; a church choir singing at a local church. Basically, men singing. Since the minister of this particular church knows me from my coverage of many previous events, he's given me full access to the place. So I after finding a tiny stairway, barely wide enough for me to fit in it with my camera bag, I come out at the top to find a wee balcony I didn't even know existed.

Winter 2008. Snow shoes. Need I say more? This was taken at a maple sugar bush in the Valley last week. Maple farm workers say if they drive half an hour into the woods to do some work and realize they forgot their snow shoes back at the base, they are going back to get them.

Making up for lost time...

The Carleton Place Legion Kings shed their gear after winning game seven of the Valley Division Championship recently. After team photos with the trophy, the boys proceeded with their victory lap around the ice, leaving their gloves, helmets and sticks strewn about the place.

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire...

I decided to pull up another classic since I am not blown away by anything I shot this week. This is from this time last year, when an old mill in Appleton burned to the ground. Speculation is still going on, and charges are finally being laid against individuals. I remember it was a rather mild day for the time of year, and I smelled like a stale old ashtray by the time I got back to the newsroom because of the ankle-deep gross water I had to wade through to get the photos. Cross your fingers for me; I've entered this, as well as other pieces of work in the Community Newspaper Association Awards. (I now feel incredibly guilty for letting work get in the way of entering pieces in the Metroland awards... I could have had a great chance with some of the categories. Thankfully, a handful of others from my company have been nominated, so I can at least be proud of them for their accomplishments.)
